The LSAT Nerds Scholarship Fund provides recipients with LSAT tutoring, LSAT prep resources, and law school admissions resources for free.

We know firsthand the impact that one-on-one tutoring can have on law school application. In today’s competitive legal marketplace, a strong LSAT score isn’t just important for getting into law school—it allows you to get into the right law school for achieving your goals.

Every day we work with students who have the ability to achieve high scores but need help getting there. This kind of help should be accessible to a wider range of students.

Since we started, we have tried to make LSAT tutoring accessible. We built a pay-as-you-go program, eschewing steep up-front costs. We recognized that many of our students could only afford a limited investment, and so we began offering workshops to all our students free of charge. But we have always recognized that there are those for whom the cost of working with us is impossible to manage, and we have worked since the beginning to change that.

We know that there are bright future lawyers out there, for whom even a limited amount of tutoring is not a financial possibility. We all stand to benefit by giving these bright minds a chance to get into top law schools and ultimately contribute to the legal profession. With our help, these students have received strong LSAT scores, moving one step closer to achieving their goals. We could not be more proud to do our part in working towards a more equitable legal profession!

We also recognize that there are particular barriers facing Black and Indigenous persons to entering the legal profession. We want to do our part to address this issue. To that end, we are offering scholarships to motivated Black and Indigenous prospective law students—without imposing a financial need requirement.

We are so humbled to be in a position to offer these scholarships and are incredibly proud to ensure all recipients receive elite tutoring!

Is It Really Free?

Yes, for those students who are selected for the program, the following services are free:

  • One-on-One Tutoring (subject to limitations)

  • Entry to LSAT Nerds Workshops

  • Access to LSAT Nerds Curriculum, Assignments, and Supplemental Materials

Most importantly, you will receive the benefit of working with a single expert who will work to ensure that you are able to maintain your progress through your entire LSAT preparation and testing process.

What are these “limitations” and “requirements” that come along with tutoring?

We require that all of our scholarship students put forth a reasonable amount of effort! This means practicing, reviewing, and joining us for free workshops and proctored exams. We do expect each student who participates to commit substantial time and effort into their success, but we hope to make it fun along the way to an important and impactful end result.

Is a Fee Waiver Required?

For most applicants, a showing of financial hardship is required. An LSAC fee waiver is not strictly necessary in order to demonstrate financial need, but the vast majority of our scholarship students have demonstrated their need in part by receiving a fee waiver.

Having a fee waiver, however, does not guarantee that you will be able to work with us. In addition, you will need to demonstrate both a compelling need for assistance and a compelling basis for wishing to pursue the LSAT.

Prospective Black and Indigneous law students do not need to qualify for an LSAC fee waiver. While financial need is a consideration, it is not a requirement for these scholarship programs.

Do You Provide Any Discounts or Other Options To those Facing Financial Hardship?

Yes, in addition to being the only provider of totally free one-on-one services, we now provide a group course for those who would not otherwise receive one-on-one tutoring, while also providing discounts to those who have received third-party scholarships.

In addition to our one-on-one tutoring, we do additionally offer a scholarship prep course, which you can apply for at the link to the scholarship application below. These courses are offered on a rolling basis to coincide with the LSAT testing dates. The criteria for assessing applicants is largely the same as the criteria for our one-on-one tutoring program. Alongside our workshops, the courses are meant to provide LSAT hopefuls with the fundamentals, whereas one-on-one tutoring is designed for students who have spent a significant amount of time studying on their own and are ready to focus on specific strengths and weaknesses.

We also allow anyone who has received a third-party scholarship for LSAT preparation to use that scholarship with us. In those cases, we will provide up to a 50% discount on tutoring sessions. If you are receiving such assistance, please reach out to learn more!

For students who do not qualify for a scholarship, our tutoring program is structured on a pay-as-you-go basis. There are no steep up front costs. In addition, we offer free workshops to all our students.

How Do You Pay For This?

This scholarship is made possible by our official pledge to set aside at least five percent of our fee from each session for the scholarship fund. For every 10 hours of paid tutoring, we deliver an hour of actual one-on-one tutoring through the scholarship program.

During 2020, our first year of operation, we were able to provide over 1,000 hours of tutoring to our scholarship students! Since then, we have continued to expand the program, providing over 2,000 hours of tutoring in 2021 and pledging at least 2,000 more hours for 2022.

We also rely on the generosity of our tutoring team members, who provide an incredible amount of support to their students. The LSAT Nerds are especially grateful to our pro bono contributors, who provide tutoring to scholarship recipients totally free of charge, further increasing the amount of scholarship tutoring that we are able to provide. Thank you all!

To get a head start on your application, please consider:

  • Why you want to go to law school

    • We want to understand what motivates you to pursue the LSAT and the extent to which you have developed a plan for pursuing law school. We want to direct our effort to helping students who have a plan for attending law school that we fit well into.

  • Why you believe you should receive an LSAT tutoring scholarship (both in terms of financial need and merit)

    • We want to understand what motivates you to pursue a legal career. We help students who aspire to work across the full range of legal roles and do not restrict the availability of the scholarship to those pursuing any particular path. Instead, we hope to understand your motivation for pursuing the law and pair you with a tutor who will be well suited to provide you guidance on the path you wish to pursue.

  • What experience do you have with LSAT studying, including diagnostic scores

    • We do not require that you have done anything in particular to prepare for working with us, but we would like to hear about what you have done! We appreciate applicants’ efforts to use the resources that are available to students who are preparing with a limited budget and often prioritize. Coming into tutoring with familiarity will only allow you to go further with the tutoring. So do your best to get started as you’re considering applying with us!

  • Availability for tutoring, and an outline for how much time you could dedicate per week to self-study

    • We will want to understand the extent you are able to commit to preparing for the LSAT. Our tutoring program is very demanding and it is important that all of our students are able to commit at least 15 hours a week to studying (outside of sessions) in order to get through enough material to address your needs and be successful.

  • When you are planning on taking the LSAT

    • We will want to understand the timeline on which you hope to pursue the LSAT. You can reach out as soon as you are ready to start planning your LSAT preparation process. That said, our scholarship program is designed to provided 6-12 weeks of intensive tutoring and preparation for students who have a set timeline for testing. You should delay your application with us until you are on a fixed timeline to maximize your likelihood of being selected for the program.
